Well, co-op is short for co-operative as in any joint work effort.  It is also used in the names of businesses that have a shared ownership/employee structure.

The other meaning of 'coop' is a small building, as in a chicken coop.

There is also the phrase 'to be cooped-up' as in being trapped in a small space for a long time.  "When I broke my leg I was cooped-up in bed for a week during skiing season."

Don't confuse 'coop' with the English pronunciation and use of the French word 'coupe' which is an old style of car.

Hope this helps.
