Both sentences are correct, but the mistake you've made in both of them is not to capitalise the letter 'I'.  Capital letters aren't optional or a question of style - it is a mistake to write 'I ' with a small letter.

I reread your sentences and I take back what I said - sorry. Like Su.Ki said, both are correct, but you should capitalise the I, although with the second sentence rather say "I heard you calling from a distance."

Also, it takes time getting used to all the different parts of italki and how everything works so don't feel bad at all. I said it just as a helpful hint.
