Maybe this will help:

1. Zvonimir je u svojoj sobi. (<em>Zvonimir is in his room</em>.)

1) Tko je u svojoj sobi? (<em>Who is in his/her room?</em>) - Zvonimir.

- The nominative case answers the questions tko? (animate; <em>who?</em>) and što? (inanimate; <em>what?</em>).

- Zvonimir is the answer to <em>who?</em>, therefore it's in the nominative case.

2) U čemu je Zvonimir? (<em>What is Zvonimir in?</em>) - U svojoj sobi. (<em>In his room.</em>)

- The locative case answers the questions u komu? (<em>in whom?</em>) or u čemu? (<em>in what?</em>).

- U svojoj sobi is the answer to <em>in what?</em>, therefore it's in the locative case.

- If you ask the question Gdje je Zvonimir? (<em>Where is Zvonimir</em>?) you can't find out the case of a noun, because various prepositions (<em>in, on, at, around, above, below, ...</em>) go with different cases. The preposition u (<em>in</em>) can go with the accusative and locative cases, depending on the meaning. If it went with the accusative case, it would express motion towards something, for example: Zvonimir ide u svoju sobu. (<em>Zvonimir is going to his room. - </em>u svoju sobu is dative).

2. Domagoj ide kući biciklom. (<em>Domagoj is going home by bike.</em>)

1) Tko ide kući biciklom? (<em>Who is going home by bike?</em>) - Domagoj.

- Domagoj is in the nominative case.

2) Čime Domagoj ide kući? (<em>Domagoj is going home using what?</em>) - Biciklom. (<em>By bike.</em>)

- Bicikl > biciklom -- instrumental.

3) Kamo ide Domagoj biciklom? (<em>Where to is Domagoj going by bike?</em>) - Kući. (<em>Home.</em>)
- Kuća > kući -- dative.
- Here you can ask the question Kamo? (<em>Where to?</em>), because you can only reply to this question using dative. Otherwise, the normal questions used for dative are komu? / čemu?

3. Hrvatska je pobijedila na nogometnom natjecanju. (Croatia won the football tournament.)
1) Tko je pobijedio na nogometnom natjecanju? (<em>Who won the football tournament?</em>) - Hrvatska.
- Hrvatska is in the nominative case.
2) Na čemu je Hrvatska pobijedila? (<em>What did Croatia win (on)?</em>) - Na nogometnom natjecanju. (<em>On the football tournament.</em>)
- Nogometno natjecanje > nogometnom natjecanju - locative.
- This one is tricky. You just need to know that the verb pobijediti means "to win". For example - Pobijedio sam. (<em>I won.</em>)
If you put a noun in the accusative as the object of the verb, then it means "to beat (someone) (in a competition)". For example - Pobijedio sam te na natjecanju. (<em>I beat</em><em> you in the competition. / I won against you in the competition.</em>) - te is the object; it answers the questions koga? / što?, so it's in the accusative case.
And if you put the preposition na after the verb and without an object, then it means "to win (something)" or "to win a prize at (something)". (You can see this in the example you gave.) Another example - Pobijedila je na Euroviziji. (<em>She won the Eurovision song contest.</em>)

I hope that helped a bit :)

Exercises.

Determine the grammatical case of the underlined nouns in the following sentences:

Zvonimir je u svojoj sobi. (Zvonimir is in his room.)

----I ask: WHERE he is he? : This is LOKATIVE case, right? - yes

Domagoj ide kući biciklom. (Domagoj is going home by bike.)

------I ask: With whom? This is INSTRUMENTAL case, right? - yes

Hrvatska je pobijedila na nogometnom natjecanju. (Croatia won the football tournament.)

------------I DONT UNDERSTAND THIS  --- mixture of genitive and locative case (na natjecanju - "on" the tourment... nogometnom - genitive case (it tells us what is this torment like) )

Third one is a lokative. Lokativ always come with one of these prepositions: na, o, po, pri, prema, u. Hrvatska je pobijedila NA nogometnom natjecanju. Since "natjecanje" is a neuter gender, in singular ending for word "natjecanje" is -u (for lokativ), and for plural is -ima (natjecanjima; lokativ)
