Usage form of ING I had had a class in which I learnt the major forms of using the ING. Firstly, we have the continuous verb, but this is the easiest form, though we can leave it aside. Secondly, we have the ING form which turns the verb into a noun: - It can be used as the subject and object, as a stand alone gerund :e.g. Eating is good. - It also can be used as a gerund phrase. e.g. Walking to the store is boring. - Gerund can be used as complement of the sentence: e.g. I see my sister making the cake. - And lastly, it can be used after prepositions: e.g. I lost weight by working out.
