Honestly, I think, in 8 months, your Vietnamese will be good enough to communicate, to make others understand you. But in order to speak as a native speaker, you'll need more time. This is a video of a Canadian guy who has been living in Vietnam for more than 10 years. Check it out and see if you can understand all what he's saying. (I mean the Vietnamese part, of course) ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNA8TvsURUA Anyway, I'm sure you're doing well. Keep trying! ;)

It definitely depends on the person. The hardest thing about Vietnamese for a lot of foreigners seems to be the pronunciation. I've met people who've mastered it pretty well after a few years but I also know of someone who has had six tutors and they all quit because he was just horrible at learning the language (and he was living in Vietnam). So it depends on you. I find some people just pick up the language better than others, especially those who already had experiences with tonal languages. But please don't let this discourage you! I recommend you trying it out and see if you can see yourself being able to speak fluently in the timespan you gave yourself :)

To be honest, I think it's simply impossible to gain native level whatever you do in 8 month. Good expectation would be a brave beginner with manageable communication - for some that's admiring level, and for some others that's just stuttering bables. It just depends on you. If you manage to keep conversing only in vietnamese without resorting to english, after 8 months, I would admire you and would take you as my role model, even though your vietnamese is wierd or awkard or anything like babbling stutter, if you just keep pleasant conversation. Fluency isn't about perfect vietnamese, but your ability to communicate anyway. I also had some unreasonable goal thee years ago, but after every effort I'v made, I'm still terrible beginner ... just cannot continue two questions away, sigh. Am I a terrible learner? Believe me, I'm a language holic with 6 languages. I'm constantly trying to get better way of learning. I had tried almost every thing I can do .. well, I'm quite busy korean, and I don't have much time, but I'm very aware of how much minutes I spend each time, so I can very clearly say how long I've spent in total. If you pay every minutes during the whole months... you may get high enough level, but vietnamese may clearly tell you are a foreigher. Without some kind of musical sensitivity talent, you'll never achieve that level. But please you just try, I know that you aren't talking about pertectionism. Perhaps eye popping, courageous, mond boggling success stories are abundant. Just try.

That depends on you. I know some expats in Vietnam, who have been living in Vietnam for more than 20 years (so they claim at least) and are not able to say "xin chao" correctly. To speak a language well cannot be measured by hours of learning. You can study long, but maybe not efficiently. So, if you are really interested in Vietnamese, I am sure, you can manage it. However, 8 months? In my experience, this is not possible. 1-2 years seems more realistic.

According to a research, you need take at least 44 weeks (equally 1100 hours) to learn Vietnamese (if you are a English native speaker). But I think it depends on each individual. Why don't you start learning now? :D
