1. Can someone please explain what 는데 means in the context of this sentence and in general? 2. I thought that 그리고 could only be used at the beginning of a sentence, but in this sentence it's not. Is 그리고 used correctly in this sentence?

1. 는데 used for describing beforehand about a situation which is related with the next clause in order to explain, ask, suggest something. It can be used for attracting attention or giving suspense. ex) Similar to English word "and", 그리고 can be used for connecting word and word. In that sentence, 그리고 is used for literal translation and it can be omitted.
