What is the difference between "umpire" and "referee"? Based on my own observation, they call the judge in ping-pong or badminton games "umpire" whereas the judge in a football match is called the referee.......

It depends on the sport. Tennis and cricket have umpires, for example, while football has referees.

Umpire is used in baseball and referee is used in other sports. Basically the same role.
