Please help me understand this paragraph~! ~This is the paragraph It is not unusual for Americans who are beyond the age of about twenty-two (and sometimes younger) and who are still living with their parents to pay their parents for room and board. Elderly parents living with their grown children may do likewise. Paying for room and board is a way of showing independence, self-reliance, and responsibility for oneself. Is this paragraph saying that it's not unusual to see Americans who are older than 22 (and sometimes younger) living with their parents paying for room and board with their own money? And, elderly parents living with their grown children also pay for room and board with their own money? If I understood it wrongly, please correct me.....!!! :D Thank you very much.

Sadly, you understood it perfectly. It is a reflection of the deterioration of the family as a social unit in the USA. Our latin neighbors are much less likely to have lost those values.
