You can use instead as an adverb or when expressing a preference or alternative. For example: We wanted to go to Paris but we visited Rome instead. The new Tom Cruise movie wasn't showing at good time for us. Instead, we saw the latest Brad Pitt film. As an adverb instead goes at the beginning or at the end of a clause.
