unclear past tense I want to ask about the particular sentence: There was no place where you could be more certain that the telescreens were watched continuously. The question is: why "were watched" used here instead of "were watching" or "watched"?

The telescreens are the object, it sounds like you've mistaken then for the agent. "the telescreens were watched (by people) continuously."
