Ah! :-) There are so many years that they are trying to "save" Venice. Fortunately till now they haven't been able to do nothing! :-P Joking apart (but not too much), the problem, a very old problem, is that Venice is more and more oppressed by the phenomenon of "acqua alta" (high water). "Acqua alta" causes partial flooding of the city of Venice and it is due to the concomitance of several other phenomenon like high tide, rain, winds from south-east (Sirocco) and pressure. It got worst during the sixties because of the digging of a canal for oil tankers (Canale dei Petroli) and the building of new islands with the dug materials which subtracted place to the water of the lagoon. Subsidence and eustasy are other causes that get worst the problem year by year. In 2003 the building of a project of a kind of mobile dams has started. This project is called MOSE and till now it is still building. The only result, at the moment, is that some corrupt politicians, officials, contractors are in jail. :-(
