Is this sentence OK? (becaue of a fire) A pitch-black smoke was coming out of the house.

you can't say "a pitch black smoke" but you can say "a bellow of pitch black smoke. Smoke is never preceded with "a" although "I"m going for a smoke" ( cigarette) is acceptable.
