相传是三国时期诸葛亮发明的。传说当时平定南蛮后渡江受到了战死冤魂的阻拦,所以用“馒头(蛮头)”代替真的人头用作祭祀之用,用来评定河神。而“包子”这个词相传始于宋代为了区分,即指有馅的馒头。另外中国北方馒头和包子区分的主要方式基本就是看有没有馅。其实中国有很多类似的面食,他们的渊源很深,比如“包子"、"花卷"、“蒸饼(类似豆沙包的天津小吃)”都可以认为是依照“馒头”演化而来的。

There is some filling in the包子,but 馒头don't have filling. They all made mainly by flour.The 馒头more like bread,and 包子more like hamberger. Hope my words are useful to you!

包子里面是有馅的。There is a steamed stuffed bun with stuffing. 馒头只是一块面团而已。Steamed buns just a piece of dough.
