Salty – which means: Upset or bitter about something.
Dope – which means: Cool or awesome.
Chill – which means: Relaxed or easygoing.
Hype – which means: Very exciting or over-the-top.
Vibes – which means: The atmosphere or mood of something.
Epic – which means: Amazing or unforgettable.

Expressions of Agreement/Excitement

さて、今日は日本の駅名や地名の読み方についてお話ししようと思います。
日本に旅行をしたときに地名の漢字の読み方について不思議に思ったことはありませんか？

例えば 「町」　という漢字
この漢字は「まち」とも「ちょう」とも呼ぶことができます。
地名や住所にとてもよく使われる漢字です。

・浜松町　はままつちょう
・御徒町　おかちまち
・人形町　にんぎょうちょう
・大手町　おおてまち
・神保町　じんぼうちょう
・田町　　たまち
・有楽町　ゆうらくちょう

などなど。。混乱しますよね。

これらは東京の地名や駅の名前です。
山手線などの電車に乗るとこの名前を聞くことがありますが
「なんで "ちょう？" 」　「なんで "まち？" 」　「何が違うの？」
と思いますよね。

実は江戸時代という数百年前の東京では武士（ぶし）と呼ばれる人達が
住んでいた場所は「まち」と呼び、町民と呼ばれる人達が住んでいた場所は
「ちょう」と呼んでいたそうです。
なので御徒町（おかちまち）など町（まち）と呼んだり、
有楽町（ゆうらくちょう）など町（ちょう）と呼んだりします。

日本の地名や駅名、人の名前などは読み方がとても複雑で
難しい場合がありますが、その理由には深い意味があります。
もし不思議に思ったときには調べてみると面白いかもしれません。

日本だけではなく世界中に深い意味のある地名や駅名がたくさんあると思います。
私にも教えてくださいね。

Vol.4  まち？ちょう？何が違うの？  /  machi？cho? What's the difference?

みなさん、こんにちは。
今日の東京は久しぶりの雨です。少しうれしいです。暑いジリジリと照り付ける太陽から少し解放（かいほう）された感じです。
今日は、朝から空はどんよりとした黒い雲に覆（おお）われていて、少し前から、ぽたぽたと雨が降り始めました。今はしとしとと雨がふっている感じです。だんだんと雨足（あまあし）が強くなってくるかもしれません。
娘が帰ってくる時間帯に、ざあざあと激しく雨が降らなければいいのですが。
雨がふると、湿度が高くなり、むしむし、じめじめとしてきます。
まあ、しょうがないですね。

先週末、娘は塾のテストでした。小学4年生です。でも東京の子供の多くは、塾へ通っています。
で、帰るなり「国語が難しかった。しかも慣用句！！『うそをつく友人とは手を（なんて）』いうの」って。
あー、もう「うそをつく友だちとは『関わらない』ってことだよ。『手をきる』っていうんだよ」といいながら、娘と二人で慣用句の勉強をしました。
手を使う慣用句、たくさんあるんですよ。
例えば、「困っている人に『手を出す』」と言えば「助けることです」。ついつい子供のことには手を出してしまう私です。過保護（かほご）すぎるとよく注意されています。
ほかにも色々ありますが、「めんどくさいので『手をぬく』」というと、適当にやることです。
息子は、常に学校の先生や私含め親から「手をぬかない」「手をぬきすぎ」「もっとまじめにやりなさい」って怒（おこ）られています。
一方で娘は、とてもまじめな性格なので、「もう少し手をぬいていいんだよ」と言いうほどです。

今日はオノマトペと「手」を使った慣用句をたくさん使ってみました。
