Hello! I am starting to study Arabic for the first time! Where do you recommend to start? Should I start learning the script or memorize phrases?

Well you have lot of support! It helps to know why you are studying and what you want out of it. There isn’t one type of Arabic. There is a huge difference in the oral, or dialect form, and a formal written form. Every educated Arab is bi-lingual in his own language. The formal form is used in newspapers, TV publications and is the same everywhere. It is derived from the Quran, and is a never ending intellectual delight. It can get a bit grammar heavy, but within wide limits it isn’t impossible. You have to learn to read it. Reading the Arabian Nights in Arabic is fantastic. Dialects differ widely in vocabulary and pronunciation, much wider than US, UK, NZ, Oz. They tend not be written. You may wish to concentrate on one if you are travelling. Due to TV, Egyptian is the most widely understood. It uses a hard G when others use a j. So Jamaal Abdul Nasir is pronounced Gamaal. Most North African dialects have many French words, but other Arabic speakers complain that they are difficult to understand.I don’t know anything about Libyan Arabic. Sudan’s is quite close to Egyptian and I can’t say anything about Chad or Somali Arabic speakers. The Levantine dialect, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and the Palestinian, is probably the easiest to pronounce, is a bit musical. The Gulf dialects sound a little harsh, but are rewarding. The hard Q sound is pronounced as a hard G. You see how it might be difficult to mix things up! Feel free to ask any questions.
