An item is always a physical object. Its a very exact description. Things and stuff are on the other hand very vague descriptions. A thing can be a physical or an abstract object but can also be f.e. a task, an event or even a state of emotions (I have a thing for her). Stuff is always plural and is similar to “things” and can be used for objects, tasks and events but not for state of emotions.
