Hi! What's the difference between the words: fog, mist and haze? I have heard of "fog" a lot, but I'm not sure about the meanings of the two because in Turkish they almost correspond to a same word. Do you use them often in everyday speach or are they mostly used in the written or formal language?

* Fog: Thick, dense cloud of water droplets; reduces visibility significantly. Common in speech. Example: "It's foggy outside." * Mist: Thin layer of water droplets; less dense than fog. Common in speech. Example: "There's a mist over the lake." * Haze: Dust or smoke particles in the air; affects air clarity. Used in discussions about pollution. Example: "The city was hazy due to pollution." Key Differences: * Fog: Very low visibility. * Mist: Light fog; better visibility. * Haze: Air pollution; not water droplets. These terms are used in both everyday and formal language.

I like the explanations given so far. The only thing that I wish to add is that "haze", unlike the others, refers primarily to visibility. For that reason we use that word in contexts unrelated to the atmosphere. For example, we might say "her explanation was so hazy I understood nothing of it.". We would not say her explanation was "foggy" or "misty".

They all have to do with water /water vapor in the air. Here's how I think of it. FOG, can be very thick, or not. It usually happens when there is a change in the weather, such as a sudden cool spell, warmup in winter, etc. The wind is pretty calm when there is fog. You probably can't see individual 'drops' of for. Fog does not fall, but rises from the ground, or rolls in from the sea. MIST is basically rain, just very light rain with small droplets that seem to hang in the air. The water is generally falling gently from the sky. HAZE, just means there is a lot of humidity in the air. It is not a form of precipitation. You won't get wet from haze. It generally happens during hot weather. The sky will look more white than blue. Far away things are not very clear, as if they're behind a thin curtain. Hope that helps.

Albert’s answer is correct. Haze refers to particulate matter which reduces long term visibility. Normally I can see Mont Blanc from here, but today it’s too hazy. The heavy rains got rid of the haze and from the summit I could see Mt. Baker and Mt. Hood at the same time. They’re 375 kms apart.

Fog is thick and sometimes difficult to see through. Mist is much thinner and haze is a very thin mist. That is why there are fog lights on cars. Try not to equate English vocabulary to your mother tongue.
