Hi! Is it correct to select the following common types of employment: full-time, part-time, contract, temporary, freelance, internship? What is the difference between contract employment and temporary employment? Thanks!

Hi Oksana. All those job descriptions are good. Temporary and contract can often be the same, but there can be a few differences too. Usually with temporary work, it is to cover busy periods, it can be started and ended very quickly at short notice and the pay tends to be hourly. A good example might be a shop close to Christmas that finds its doing well and needs an extra salesperson. It hires somebody to start immediately, with no guarantee of how long they need the worker for. Contract is when the boss and worker work out a contract before, the period of time it covers, and often the pay is weekly, monthly or a lump sum that covers the period of the contract.

Fixed-term contract work (often simply called "contract work") is often renewed indefinitely - we call this a "rolling contract". This is often done in place of a permanent contract, to safeguard the employer, so it's easy to let people go by saying their contract has expired, so the employee has no right to dispute it. In an officially permanent job, the employee has more rights, and can not be sacked so easily. If a job is advertised as "temporary", it's less likely to be renewed after the initial term is up, compared to contract work which is kind of 50-50 whether it will be renewed or not, and there may be a gap between contracts, and changes to the contract are easily made after expiry of the initial term.

Yes, those are common types of employment: full-time, part-time, contract, temporary, freelance, and internship. Here's the breakdown of the difference between contract employment and temporary employment: * Contract employment: A contract employee works for an employer for a specific period, defined in an employment contract. The contract lays out the terms, like job duties, compensation, and duration. It's often project-based or for a specific need. When the contract ends, the employment relationship also ends, though the contract can sometimes be renewed. * Temporary employment: A temporary employee is hired for a limited time to cover short-term needs like seasonal work, filling in for absent employees, or handling extra work during busy periods. Unlike contract employment, temporary workers may be employed through staffing agencies and don’t always have a set end date in their agreement. In summary, while both roles are for a limited period, contract employees typically have a formal agreement with set terms, while temporary workers are usually more flexible and can be employed directly or through agencies for short-term tasks.
