Food Travels Thousands of Miles

Question: Today, food travels thousands of miles from the farm to the consumer. Is it a positive or a negative development?
Nowadays we can buy food that is made in places that are far1* from us. There are some debates about whether it is positive or negative.4* I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the long-time travelling food which travels a long way2* in this essay.
The first advantage is that our lives become more colorful because of that. We can eat food from all over the country and all over the world. On the other hand, farmers can sell their products to the whole country, even export them to foreign countries, thus helping them make more money. It is a win-win situation for the consumers and the food providers.
More importantly, the ability of to travelling transport food thousand of miles helps solving to solve the problem of lacking food shortages3* . If a city or a country suffers from starvation, food can be easily transferred to that place. It is a big achievement in human history.
However, there are also some disadvantages. Local farmers now have to face the competition from farmers in other cities or other countries. Moreover, if a country has very little ability to provide food by itself and has to rely on food imported from other countries, it may have a negative influence on its national security. It is less likely to happen in my opinion because the importance of food is a common knowledge now. Usually, the government will make sure it has the ability to provide enough food for its own population.
From where I stand, I think it is a positive development that food can travel far to the consumer. We now have a better life due to this development.

2* your sentence - long time travelling food- would be more - food which travels for a long time- but I don't think this is what the question has asked you. In Cambridge exams answering the question correctly is a main part.
3* you could say - lack of food.
4* The sentence is grammatically ok but sounds strange and is vague. As it is a sentence you will probably use a lot in IELTS (they are generally boring topics) it would be worth working on it. - eg. Whether or not this is a step forward has caused heated debates.
