In the ESL world an 'idiom' is usually an expression or saying that you can't deduce the meaning of just by looking at it as a whole or by examining the words individually. For example: My Uncle kicked the bucket last night(My Uncle died last night)

I am not sure what the problem is.. I do not believe in 'wrong" questions. After the last answers, I hope I am not very wrong! I would say a language is a system of verbal and written communication (most often, but sometimes with the body - smoke signals or some other mechanism.) Idioms, I would say are alterations in language with concepts and sentence structure specific to a culture and sometimes a region.
