first of all, make it clear that why you want to improve your Chinese. if for some certain purpose，buy the professional book for practice; if only for chinese itself, continue to study a series text books till the last and make sure that you can use what you learnt from them. if you're in China, buy some classical books like famous novels or book written by famous authors while practising; if you're not in China, listen to some news and see some films made by beijing with actores from beijing. (because their mandarin tend to be standard)
