Is the slang phrase "cool beans" still being used throughout the world today or something? In the mid-90's, this slang phrase to mean "cool", "awesome", "great", etc. was used in my area of the United States by the younger crowd. It has since died out. Yet, a few foreign employees who recently started working at my company use it all the time. I am wondering if they picked this up from British English, if it is used there still or ever was, or where exactly they could have. It's just a curiosity of mine, although my other American co-workers think it is so lame for someone to use this expression. I believe that anyone should be able to express themselves as they see fit and should be able to use whatever vocabulary they want, I wonder if I should advise them against using it if they don't want to be considered a loser here though. Hehehehe. Btw, for a reference point, these employees are from Russia. Perhaps they picked it up from circa 1993 American television or something. I don't know. Hmmm. LOL

I have heard it here in the united states by natives. When they say it they are purposefully trying to seam "dorky" or "childish". Dear God, its hard enough to learn another language let alone the coming and going phrases of generations. Hopeful Spanish doesn't have that sort of thing. I know growing up in Florida my friends and I would make up words all the time. "That girl is a grommit" (unattractive). "She gave me the blick'em" (a common STD - although never true - we just said it anyway). I am pretty sure UK teens are known for similar word making.

Some people used "cool bananas" in Australia around the same time. Even then, we wished a fiery demise on anyone who dared utter those words. I mean, it was totes annoying. Were they for serials?

I grew up in New Jersey, and I personally don't use the phrase, though actually my wife does occasionally. I might consider it a bit quirky or odd if someone used it often, but I wouldn't take it negatively.
