For example, they can think dreamily about finding a person who loves them, who is wealthy, smart, and who totally understands their personality and its nuances. This is perhaps, a common "dream". Beyond that however, there is the romantic in the sense of a dreamy sensualist. Romantic can also be understood as something which goes beyond the dreams of marriage and love relationships. For example, an extremely patriotic person could be described as a "hopeless romantic". Nationalistic ideals you see, can also be unrealistic. Any kind of an unrealistic expectation can be thought of as a romantic thought. In fact, one can see "hopeless romantics" who become English students. They study language with an unrealistic expectation. Such "romantics" may be convinced that they know exactly what kind of English instruction is helpful to them. The result of that is that they can dismiss good English instruction, and go off to pursue a confused understanding. Perhaps they think that only if they have very difficult lessons, from a harsh disciplinarian, they will advance in their knowledge of English. Perhaps the student may think that only if they can read nonfiction books with flowery language and extravagant plots, they can advance their knowledge of English. Such approaches can be accurately described also as romantic. The word can take on different nuances of meaning. Also, people can do different things as a result of their knowledge of romanticism. For example, one person who discovers romanticism or romantic feelings within them, may choose to punish themselves or "beat up" their own person, because they suppose they should Be---Some---Other---Way. Other persons may draw themselves so deeply into romanticism that the seek only a romantic relationship, at the expense of a more practical and useful relationship.
