It is extremely offensive to use the name of God as a cheap word to throw around as if it were worth less than a penny. It says in the Bible not to take His name in vain. He said that "he will not hold him guiltless that takes His name in vain." It is one of the ten commandments (one of the ten central commandments). In vain = without purpose The variations gosh and goodness are ways to say it without saying it, and to me they are just the same. It is like when someone writes some insulting word with odd symbols instead. Sadly we live in a God-less society that feels that rudeness, insults and blasphemy are 'cool', and they don't realize that there truly is a God in heaven who sees and hears it all, and we will all face Him on that day. They are playing with fire. What I find attractive instead is someone who is respectful and well-mannered, and who acknowledges his Creator in thankfulness. But that is out of style these days. I hope this different view is helpful for you to see things in perspective.

From your question, I'm assuming you mean these three expressions: (1) Oh my god! (2) Oh my goodness! (I think you made a typo "godness" --> sp?) (3) Oh my gosh! All of the above expressions mean the same time. They are used when one is surprised, upset, frustrated, happy, shocked, etc. The intonation of these sentences reveals the emotion of the person. "goodness" and "gosh" are euphemisms for "god". This means that "god" was replaced by "goodness" and "gosh" so that the expression would not be offensive.

Some people may think when you say Oh My God is disrespect. I met some christian people who always say oh my goodness.
