Why is the plural for result is used? There is this website (testyourvocab) where you can tese your English vocabulary. When you have finished checking all the boxes around the words you know, a window will pop up which says: " Final RESULT your total vocabulary size is estimated to 12 000(for example) words." Here the word result is sigular, while in an article on the same website, its runner says: "And probably half the e-mails we've received have been from non-native speakers asking for numbers to compare their personal results with. This presented us with a problem: how to produce numbers that are meaningful enough to compare ONE's < RESULTS > with?" http://testyourvocab.com/blog/2011-07-25-New-results-for-foreign- learners#mainchartNonnative Here the word result is plural. This is interesting. I know that some nouns can be used as both countable and uncountable, with regard to a particular sense. People sometimes use them in singular, sometimes in plural. Why?

You use the singular if the score is based on one outcome. You use the plural if the score is based on more than one outcome. For example, if you take an exam, a friend might ask about your result. But if that exam has more than one part, and each part has a different score (such as the IELTS exam, which has a reading, writing, and listening score), a friend might ask about your results, because they might want to know the result of each section.

Hello, The answer is in your question, I guess. ;-) You use result (singular) when you are referring to one specific result, as in the outcome: - The result of an experiment - The result of the election You use results (plural) when referring to more than one result, as in a consequence: - The results of war - The results of deforestation Hope this helps! Thank you so much Mr. Ian. You have not confused me but also made me clear about the use of the RESULTS. Actually your explanation is what I've been waiting for. Let me tell the truth. When I'd read Micha's answer, I had no new idea still. When I had read Abdulla's answer, although he did not give a direct clarification on my confusion either, but I had a new understanding of the "RESULTS": ONE may take the test for more than one times! But I did not put this idea onto reply to the answers because I was hoping there may be someone who initially comes to this point---and you've been the one :D, thank you! The previous two answers are also helpful though, this may be the merit of brainstorm.

In the first instance it is referring to the test you just took, your result is whatever. In the second instance is is referring to the test you just took plus any previous tests. you may have tried the same test 100 times and often program have little mistakes like that. If you only take the test once then it will probably say the plural (More than one) because it would need a line of code testing if that is true or false and then put the result. Often in programs small errors exist because they have been overlooked in the thousands of characters that make the program. No one is perfect but I hope I have not confused the issue for you.
