Drain vs strain Are they interchangeable when it comes to getting water off of food? Drain the pasta. Strain the pasta.

You can use drain. We use drain when talking about removing liquid from something. We use strain to remove solid things from something. 😊

Hello! To "drain" something is to let out the water so that it dries for example a bath or sink. To strain something is to pour a mixture of liquids and solids through something, like a colander, which has holes or small openings that will allow the water through but not the solids. In this way we are separating the solids from the liquids.
