Which preposition had I better use suggesting a toast? About 2 years ago I was at the party amongst my friends where somebody of them had brought the American who was working in Russia. We had fun drinking alcoholic beverages. All of my friends when they were speaking toasts used a preposition “for” – for our friendship, for health and so on. I always thought that it should be “to” – to our friendship, to health. I asked that American and he answered that I was wrong: “for” is right and I shouldn’t use “to” in these situations at all. I latched on to it but anyway during these 2 years It’s never happened me to meet the preposition “for” in such a context. Though “to” I’ve heard many times watching movies of the English speaking countries. I am a bit stunned. Why did that American tell me that I was wrong using “to” offering toasts?! What preposition should I use? Thanks in advance for your help.
