How do I ask "are you a student?" in Japanese. Is this correct がくせいですか" We have only learned university student right now so I'm assuming that is what the teacher wants. So is がくせいですか correct?

The general word for "student" is 学生(がくせい)。 If you want to specify what kind of student, then you have the following options: 小学生 (しょうがくせい)= Elementary School Student 中学生 (ちゅうがくせい)= Junior High School Student 高校生 (こうこうせい)= High School Student 大学生 (だいがくせい)= University Student

がくせいですか is a question. It means "are you a student?" (or maybe "is he a student?" - it's impossible to know without the context). As I mentioned below, the word for student is simply がくせい, so you have to ditch the ですか. If you want to say university student then you have to put だい in front of がくせい to form だいがくせい.
