Hello! Do we say: Did you hear me say or did you hear me saying? I've found on the web that the first one is correct(or at least the most common and natural to ears). However, there is a book titled; Did you hear me crying. I'm confused. I've also heard in a film somebody 'say'; Do you want to see me play. Which is correct and could you give some explanation as to what grammar rule applies to it. Thanks a lot!

Both are correct. Did you hear me say...? Past tense Ex. Did you hear me say I wouldn’t be able to go? Did you hear me saying...? Progressive past Ex. Did you hear me saying I wouldn’t be able to go ..?

I heard her sing a lovely song. [= I heard her sing the whole song.] I heard her singing a lovely song. [= I heard her after she had started singing.] More information: https://www.grammar.org/verbs-perception/ English Grammar in Use by Murphy, Unit 67
