Hello! I’m James, an English language teacher and writer living in Scotland. I come from an academic background, having a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in English and American literature. That means I love reading and talking about books! I also enjoy going to the cinema; playing video games; spending time with friends and family; studying history, mythology and folklore; writing essays about popular culture and working on my novel.عني كمعلّم
I'm a qualified English language teacher, with TEFL and CELTA teaching certificates. I have previously taught pre- and upper-intermediate English language learners in a classroom setting. I offer friendly and informal conversation-based tutoring for intermediate, upper-intermediate and advanced learners. We’ll improve your fluency by focusing on your pronunciation, intonation, spoken English grammar, vocabulary, understanding of idioms, and anything else you need help with.
We can talk about the topics that interest you, or we can roleplay the conversations you need to practice. I can also help you with your reading and writing.

Professional TeacherI have been teaching professionally on italki since 2018, helping students to advance their English level as well as prepare for the IELTS test. In addition, drawing on my past experience as an academic specialising in English and American literature, I have been able to offer students more advanced lessons that seek to improve their English through reading, discussing and writing about literature. Volunteer Property AssistantWhilst volunteering as a property assistant, I worked primarily as a room guide at the NTS's Gladstone’s Land property on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. I studied the history of the property and of Edinburgh before relating this knowledge back to visitors. I worked closely alongside different teams of guides, co-ordinating their coffee breaks. I also assisted at reception and in the gift shop, selling tickets and merchandise, operating the till, taking inventory of stock and answering enquiries.

Volunteer Partnerships ResearcherAs a partnerships researcher I used my research skills to identify charities that ProjectScotland could partner with and to gather information requested by the Partnerships Managers. I developed a system for creating and managing the posters used to advertise ProjectScotland's volunteering opportunities, condensing the available information into clear, concise advertisements. I later returned to induct my successor in this role.
