Hello! I have been teaching on italki for about four years. Based on my experience, I believe that students who thoroughly study textbooks learn to speak beautiful and good Japanese the fastest. On the other hand, students who focus only on conversation tend to end up with messy grammar, forget words easily, and use a lot of slang, resulting in strange Japanese.
Therefore, my conclusion is that the best approach is either to study a textbook like GENKI with a teacher or to study it independently while practicing conversation with a teacher.

今日もとても楽しい授業ありました！N2の教科書を使って新しい言葉を使いました。先生はとても優しくて難しいことを簡単に教えました。Using the N2 textbook, Ms. Cherry always goes over the example sentences and questions to help you understand every part of the text. She is encouraging and patient, explains difficult concepts very simply and helps you answer difficult grammar questions. 今日もありがとうございます！

Highly recommend. Cherry has a great way of developing your speaking skills and incorporating error correction and grammar indirectly into the conversations.

Cherry is just a fantastic tutor. Your Japanese will improve rapidly if you meet her in the class. That is what is happening to me. I really mean it. Trust me and try it yourself. In fact I am 74.

Cherry sensei was very nice to talk to!!! She was very helpful by writing down notes of words I didn't understand yet!! She also has very exciting energy that encouraged me to talk more!!
