I faced difficulties learning languages. I still do, actually. Language is primarily a tool of communication. Its purpose is to exchange information. Therefore, speaking and listening should make up the lion share of your study. That's what a tutor is for! As for vocabulary, we often memorize individual words, only to forget them soon after. I believe reading articles of your level (or slightly higher) is a much more efficient way to come across phrases and words in context. Context is everything!

The hard part is Chinese characters. But don't worry, because we only need 3000 words for our daily communications. I have been a Chinese teacher for five years. I find that many beginners worried a lot about their pronunciation at the beginning. They are too careful to avoid making any mistakes.
