We covered a lot of topics, so this will be the first of two episodes with our conversation. The main theme of our conversation was building great listening skills in another language. In this first episode, we talk about the importance of listening when learning another language, including pronunciation, and what to do when you don’t understand your colleagues in meetings.  Here are some gems from this episode:

“People might think, “I spend most of my time speaking.” But listening is actually the skill that dominates. So by that logic, the foundation for also learning future languages should be listening.”

“So what’s really helped me to get fluent in French is observing what people say, understanding them, and then copying them.”

“Notice the expressions that people keep using and then use them. You will sound more authentic because you'll be using what the people around you actually say, as opposed to what you read in a book or what you got out of a list of 100 idioms.”

今日は、今の大阪について。
今、僕は実は大阪にいます。

昨日飛行機で大阪に来ました。
北海道の空港もそうでしたが、特に大阪の空港は、海外の人がとても多かったです。

年末年始に近づいているからかもしれないですが、観光の人が確実に戻ってきていますね。

自宅に帰る前に、大阪のキタというエリアの梅田によりました。空港から家に帰る途中に梅田があります。

梅田も人がたくさんいました。
クリスマス前というのもあり、プレゼントなどを探している人が多かったですね。

みなさんはクリスマスプレゼントは買いましたか？
僕と妻は、プレゼントを買いあうことはしていません。
はじめは少しだけしたと思いますが。

本当に欲しい物ならいいんですが、どうしても物を増やしてしまうことになります。2人ともできるだけ物を増やしたくない、できるだけ少ない物で生活をしたいので、プレゼントは買っていません。

ちょっと話がそれましたが、今の大阪は、コロナ前と同じぐらいの人がいます。

もちろん、マスクも必要ですが、前ほど気にする必要はなさそうだなと思いました。

旅行で大阪に行く予定の人は楽しんでくださいね！
