From the chart above, it is apparent that changes have taken place in the population of Chinese cities and rural villages. In the 1990s, one can see a huge gap between the number of residents in the cities and rural areas. At that time, the rural population was close to three times the number of city residents. But ten years later, the population living in cities increased steadily to 458 million while the rural village population stayed the same. By the 2010s, the mix was 50/50.
