How to get C2 lvl in English? Hello,

I've been learning English since 8. To be honest, Russian education system is the worst as no one can teach you English here properly. So I started to learn it by myself. All the tests determine my lvl as Upper Intermediate/Advanced (C1). And it seems that i got stuck at this lvl forever. I really want to speak like a native speaker or close to it at least but i have no idea how to do it.

Thank you for your advice.

P.S. please check this message for mistakes.

In my opinion, it will be hard to reach a C2 level if you don't use English as your predominant a) business and/or b) social language. This is because you simply won't get enough practice and your survival will depend more on native proficiency in another language. I think you have to be prepared to let your Russian deteriorate for a while, while you immerse deeply in English.

"How can I reach level C2 in English?"

If you're already at C1 without much outside help, you've done quite well! However, moving up to C2 means finding someone to guide you.

"Just chatting" doesn't help as much as you'd want, because a lot of errors get ignored in casual chat. The focus tends to be more on being understood than aiming for a native way of expressing yourself. The same goes for workplace situations: if "understandable" is your standard then you're only using the bare minimum.

You do need to set higher standards for yourself as you improve. I know this sounds obvious, but I often meet students who think it's enough just to know more words and more grammar rules.

Have a look at what you write and say, and ask yourself if it's truly correct and natural. You may find you've been carrying errors since elementary level because you weren't aware of them. Again, find a guide who will honestly tell you what's needed and train you to bridge that gap.

If regular teaching sessions are out of your budget, you can still use italki's Notebook section for writing practice (ask lots of questions!), and you can also record yourself, upload the audio and post a link here in Discussions. As a community, we'll be glad to give you feedback. :)

I wish I could give you a quick and easy recipe, because then I could apply it to my French and Russian and reach level C2 in those two in no time. :-P

That said, I think Michael Chambers is probably right. I did, indeed, reach level C2 by the time I graduated from high school (I lived in Serbia at the time and attended only Serbian schools), and I believe the key to that was an absolutely enormous amount of exposure to English. I must have been watching at least three hours a day of English language content (mostly movies and TV series). That's on top of writing often lengthy e-mails (in English) to my international pen-pals every day, doing my best to read as much as I could (umm, a book a month maybe?), and actively studying grammar and vocabulary. So, I'd estimate that, as a high school student, I was spending 4-5 hours a day on English, day in, day out. (Mind you, most of it felt like entertainment and not work, but it was still exposure to native-level English.) Ugh. Now that I put it that way, it's no wonder my French and Russian are nowhere near C2 level...

@Irena, waw! That’s interesting and think it’s the proper way to achieve C2 level in any language. A good basis of grammar and an enormous amount of time exposed to that language.

Thank you for sharing your experience, I was always wondering how you reached your high level of English.

Start writing really a lot in English and in deep details. This way you'll check if you really can use your vocabulary at C1, send texts to literate native speakers who read a lot. Start reading the university literature, probably connected with your current occupation, in the original English textbooks. If that's too easy or too boring to read, get out of the comfortable zone and pick up English literature. C2 is basically about reading, listening, grasping and writing everything in the original language, so pick up the literature, scientific programs, programs about traditions and study them. If you still have problems with pronunciation, don't worry more you listen and understand better you become at repeating after the speaker. Yeah, don't forget from time to time to speak with a native speaker to enforce your speaking skills.
