NIGHTMARY
LOOKING FOR THE CLOSEST ENGLISH WORD TO THE SPANISH MEANING "CUTRE" I'd like to know what is the best translation of the spanish word "Cutre" in English language (a word used both for objects and people) I have been looking in many other sites (WordReference.com, UrbanDictionary.com, Dictionary.com...) and i've already found some results (seedy/shabby (sórdido, raído, andrajoso) tacky (vulgar, cursi, estrafalario, hortera) grooty (de mala calidad) But I'm not still really sure about any of the meanings. So now I just want your suggestions. Therefore, to find the best word and make it easy: Please, replace the word in brackets (cutre) with an english word (just ONE word that can be used in the 3 sentences) -El chat de Italki casi nunca funciona. Es muy cutre! : -Italki Chat hardly ever works. It's so (cutre) -Fue a su propia boda en chándal. Qué tía más cutre. -She went to her own wedding wearing tracksuit. What a (cutre) girl! -Su regalo lo ha comprado en las rebajas de un bazar chino. Nadie puede ser más cutre. -His gift has been bought in the sales of a chinese bazaar. Nobody can be so (cutre) Thanks for your help and suggestions. ------ If ever one can spread a little happiness, one way is to please correct all my errors.

It can be translated in several ways, depending on context. The words I've used below are British English. -Italki Chat hardly ever works. It's so crap. -She went to her own wedding wearing tracksuit. What a chav! -His gift has been bought in the sales of a chinese bazaar. Nobody can be so naff. Please note that "tacky" can only be used for an object or an action, but not a person. Also, "grooty" is not a word. We do have the word "grotty", but it does not mean "bad quality". It means "horrible" or simply "not very nice". We often use it to describe the weather!

I can't think of a standard English word but the slang use of the work "trifling" might be what you are looking for. I've only heard it from young people. It can be used in many different situations. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=trifling Is CUTRE slang or regular Spanish?
