Do you speak English?/ Can you speak English? Can you tell me the differences between “Do you speak English?”and“Can you Speak English?”Do they all mean 你会说英语吗?I had an amusing experience last year. After I had left a small village in the south of France,I drove on to the next town.On the way,a young man waved to me.I stopped and he asked me for a lift.As soon as he got into the car,I said good morning to him in French and he replied in the same language.Apart from a few words,I do not know any French at all.Neither of us spoke during the journey.I had nearly reached the town ,when the young man suddenly said, very slowly,"Do you speak English?' As I soon learnt,he was English himself. Why didn't the young man use "Can you speak English?" ThanksAnother question: Can I change the sentence“I had nearly reached the town, when the young man suddenly said…” to ” I nearly reached the town, when the young man suddenly said…“ ? Thanks

I think .. If you ask a people ''Do you speak English'?' maens If he come from a country whose native language is English..but ''can you speke English''means if he can speak English

Two sentences are very much the same to me,yet I think "do you speak English?" is much more polite;and "can you speak English?" is tend to point that someone has no ability to speak English(which is kind of sort of insult).

do you speak English? 问的是,你讲英语吗?侧重于问你是否具有用英语做实际交流的能力。如果问的是can you speak English?那么就算你只会讲一句hello和goodbye,你也可以说Yes,I can,但这个时候yes,I do可就不是能随便说的。 另外,had不能省略。为的是体现事件的先后顺序,以使故事情节更清晰易懂。
