endeavor = meaning and usage What does endeavor (BE = endeavour) mean and what context is it used in? Is there a synonym for it. I have looked up in the online dictionary, but still do not understand what it means: 1. A conscientious or concerted effort toward an end; an earnest attempt. 2. Purposeful or industrious activity; enterprise. Thank you very much indeed for your help Regards

"Endeavor" as a verb that takes an object means something very similar to the verb "to try." For example, "He endeavored to change the law, but was ultimately unsuccessful." "Endeavor" as a verb without an object means something like "to strive," or to give a lot of effort. For example, "She must endeavor if she wants to improve her skills." This form is not very common in American English. "Endeavor" as a noun just means a hearty effort. "Through his tireless endeavors, the restaurant was a big success."

It is a fancy way to say "try." For example: "I will endeavour to complete your request on time." It can also be a noun, like "Our latest endeavour is sure to succeed."
