Can I describe a girl as "bastard", or is it particularly for guys? If it's just for guys, what would be an equivalent word to describe a girl? My question seems really ridiculous!!!!

As Warren says, if we are talking about a child born outside of the marriage then 'bastard' applies. We don't use the term much these days as there are many children born outside of marriage and the stigma has almost gone. No, if I get angry I don't call females bastards. I suppose I could do, but out of habit and convention I reserve 'bastard' for men. Men are bastards. Females are bitches. Hopefully we are not bastards and bitches too much of the time!

your question is highly impolite and potentially insulting to women. A bastard strictly speaking is a child born out of wedlock, so a female can be a bastard. When used as an insult it generally applies to men....women may be called a bitch . but never call a woman a bitch to her face - she'll belt you one.

'Bastard' is only used for men. To say that 'bitch' is the 'equivalent' for a woman isn't entirely accurate, as the two words imply a different kind of behaviour. The reasons for this are so unpleasant, irrational and sexist that it's probably not worth looking into further. 'Bitch' is a nasty word, and I'm sure that all the other native speakers here would agree that you shouldn't use it. Two more points about 'bastard': 1. The definition 'a child born out of wedlock' is hardly ever used in modern day English or modern contexts. 2. 'Bastard' can be offensive or non-offensive, depending on the tone of voice, context, and relationship between the speakers. While it is offensive if used in an aggressive manner, it can be used almost affectionately between friends. If one friend called another 'a lucky bastard' or 'a silly bastard', this wouldn't be offensive at all - on the contrary, it would confirm the fact that the two men were good friends.
