Celina and Ronie are right: "hablaba" is usually translated as "I talked", but in Spanish both work in the same way. "Estaba hablando cuando sonó el teléfono" means the same as "hablaba cuando sonó el teléfono", but I have to say that the first one is "more correct" for an action developing in time (just as you would use it with the past continuous). Anyway, both mean the same when you use them.

hi...you can use both in spanish, they're two diferent ways to express the same....i hope u can understand me :)....example: hablaba con mi amiga or yo estaba hablando con mi amiga both are sentences in the past form, you used "talking" as a verb and you can do the same with others verbs example: look....yo miraba or yo estaba mirando, jump....yo saltaba or yo estaba saltando

It's two different structures... Hablaba is pret. imperfecto / indicativo, and Estaba hablando is a 'perífrasis' (estar + gerund), but in this case they are synonymous and interchangeable. I would like to see the context, but probably both fit :) Take care, Alejo.
