After the word "side-effect", the prepositions, of or to can appear, I know. After the word "side-effect", the prepositions, of or to can appear, I know. When do you use "of" or "to" after the word, side-effects?

"To" tells you what suffers the effect. "Of" tells you the nature of the effect. For example, a side effect to the gums -- of inflammation. Or you could say the side effect is inflammation of the gums.
