Who´s that chick?? -- Is the word "chick" considered a derogatory slang? Hello. Who´s that chick? She´s a cute chick? I met a nice chick last night? My borther´s chick is fond of shopping. I´ve heard some different opinions on this term. Is it considered a derogatory slang? Can I use it informally for girls and young women? Thanks :)

Some people don't like this word. Other people are not bothered by it. David is correct, guys do not call this to a girl's face. Sometimes girls do, however. I had a friend in high school who actually used this word as her name. It means a sexy girl. Some women are offended when you refer to them as "sexy" because they want to be known as more than a body. Too many men see women only as a means to satisfy sexual appetite. Feminists especially do not like this word.

It is a tough one to answer. The truth is that some people (particularly females) might find it offensive, or at least derogatory. Mostly it would be used by guys to other guys - or perhaps girls might use it regarding other girls. I don't imagine many guys would say it to a girl as a form of address though. At least, not in my experience.

It's mostly used for girls with attractive appearance. I feel it's somewhat derogatory, depending on the person. I've heard guys call their girlfriend "chick", but not everyone would appreciate being called that. To be on the safe side, it's best to avoid using this word when in doubt (unless it's about poultry). But there's probably no need to feel insulted if you hear other people use it.

Yes, you can use it informally (very informally) to refer to young women. It is not terribly derogatory, but it is not a respectful way to refer to a female. While it may have been used to refer to "sexy" ladies in the past, that usage is anachronistic now, it mostly just means "young girl" these days. Some girls don't like it, but most of them don't care. Being a girl yourself, I can't imagine that anyone would take offense if you used it, but guys should probably be careful :)
