It's easy. Imagine, that you are trying to pull the guy to go somewhere, but he does not want to. You may interpret it as he is as subborn as a donky. Donkeys have long ears, as you know. What is the easiest way to pull a donky? Of course, pull it by its ears only!

Brian, it actually means that there was a certain resistance on the part of 'arrguments', 'analogies', 'expamples' etc.:) "тянуть А за Б" = pull A by B. Means you drag/pull object A holding it by its part B: тянуть за руку the same story with хватать, держать, брать, тащить etc. Держаться за руки = hand in hand. You may either обхватить талию (of some person, likely a woman and may be in a dance) or обватить её [a person] за талию. This 'за' happens Very often in Russian with тянуть, тащить, держать, брать etc. возьми [чемодан] за ручку. Or intransitive: возьмись за ручку. Literally "take yourself by the handle", but reflexive -ся just hints here on "make it so, that you are holding the handle". I'm not sure, I think in English there will be simply 'take the handle'. This phrase makes us think of a bus (where you hold a handle in order not to fall), or a bag. Возьми её (сумку) за ручку is also possible (with a different shade!) or Возьми за ручку (if it is obvious that the bag is meant). Now, "возьми ручку" makes me think (out of context!) about a different meaning of ручка: a pen. Because here we speak about ручка as an object which you can manipulate. But it also can be used with bags and buses. Now back to arguments: Imagine an animal (a donkey?) or a person, who doesn't want to go. You take it by its ears and pull. He resists. Metaporically it means: this argument doesn't full belong here. "Far-fetched" works a similar way.

It works the same way as it does in any other language I suppose. For instance if you want to prove something unbelievable you usually start using some theories which are obviously ridiculous. In that case the opponent might say that your arguments are far-fetched or "притянутые за уши".
