접근하다 / 다가오다 (and 다가가다, 다사서다, 다가앉다) 접근하다 is a formal word which means "to approach or get near (someone or something)". It is formal and factual, and more often used in news reports, literature and formal speech than in conversation. 다가오다 (come near), 다가가다(go near), 다가서다(come stand near), 다가앉다(sit near) are everyday words. They share the meaning of "to get closer" with 접근하다 but don't sound as cold and business-like. 다가오다 and 다가가다 are sometimes used figuratively, in the sense of "to understand and give support". When the moon gets closest to the earth. My teacher came over to me as I greeted him. The store helper walked to the customer smiling. Come sit here closer to me. Do not get near to the exhibits.
