The way that native speakers learn vocabulary is by seeing a new word in a context- for example a song or a book, and then guessing the meaning from the context. Many times we may hear someone use a word and say to ourselves- oh I don't think I know what that word means exactly but I would guess it means something like x. Then we can come across this word again and our guess will be confirmed. If you mean how do we remember the word- the only way is by associating it with something that we already know. The associations may be personal, and different from one person to another. It is hard to explain but we need to "hook" the word to some sound or picture in our brain. This way we can remember.

OF course we we will all meet new words that we don't know if we read good literature (not junk) or listen to good lectures (TED for example) Those are the best ways of learning vocabulary- by reading a lot. I don't know if Americans have difficulty spelling and reading. Many people don't bother to read these days, in which case maybe their vocabulary and spelling could be weak. It depends on the person. Some people read a lot while others do not.

3, Native speakers do not learn unnatural phrases or faulty grammar. In the first place, native speakers learn correct one from a master. But non native speakers learn erred ones from their teachers ( NNEST) and friends. Also non native English speaking students try to use English creatively. It is very common in Chinese as Mandarin is a very creative language but English can not be used in such a way-- only fixed expressions or phrases otherwise faulty collocations and unnatural expressions and errors. Note: Everyone makes errors but it is the duty of the writer to eliminate errors by proofreading it or asking a good tutor to correct it. I have not proofread mine so it is not an error-free one. Hi Daisy, Learning Root words or etymology is not ideal. For instance, Father --> padre ( latin). If you split Padre into two syllable Pa dre, Latin has no meaning. English is an Indo-European language so it leads us to Sanskrit and eventually Tamil where Sanskrit originated from. Neither Sanskrit has the root meaning but Tamil has it. Padre comes from Pithru (sanskrit and Tamil). In Tamil, Pith = Essence or Juice RU = root. Basically the meaning for 'father' is the essence of root. Some call it ' who has the power of semen and reproduced his replica'. So learning root words won't do much. I hope you understand English evolved from Latin and Greek after the 10 th cen AD/CE I guess ( not sure!!!). My suggestions: 1, The use of a language is communication so make sure you can write error free ( grammar and Vocabulary). You might be able to make it error free in terms of grammar but vocabulary is the hardest part for a non native English speaker/user. The main issue would be faulty collocation. So many errors can be eliminated by yourself if you re-red what you wrote. Thanks to patience is one of the examples and it is not very natural to say, however, it has been used in a different way. 2, Work on the basic English errors you make and upgrade into the advanced one. Once you are able to write and speak error-free English (, which is most difficult part, not the advanced levels or C1 C2 vocabulary), you can learn more. The main issue is you are learning too much and mastering nothing. In a bid to impress others many students try to learn academic words that we do not need in our life.
