What's the difference between damai and perdamaian? I'm creating a flashcard to learn the Bahasa word for "peace". I've found two different translations, "damai" and "perdamaian". Perdamaian seems to be the preferred direct translation for the word "peace", but I can see the root word is "damai". How does the "per - an" affix change the meaning in this case? I'm just trying to decide which one is the best to put on the flashcard. I'm leaning towards "damai" because it is the root form. Thoughts? Thank you!

Yes. I think it's better to put it from the basic word "damai". before it's added either with prefixes and suffixes. The word "damai" is the same as saying "peace", when it is all alone. I think damai can both means noun or adjective. For example: as noun: Ketika kami berangkat dari lapangan udara, Amerika sedang damai. (when we took off from the airfield, America was at peace) as adjective: surabaya adalah kota yang damai di indonesia. (surabaya is a peaceful city in Indonesia) in bahasa indonesia, everything comes from a basic word. from that basic word, you can change it to verb, noun, adj, or adverb by adding a suffix or prefix. damai (n) perdamaian (n) didamaikan (v) passive berdamai (v) mendamaikan (v) mem·per·da·mai·kan (v) : to make it peaceful. pendamai (n) : someone who make something peaceful. kedamaian (n): the feeling of peace

damai; (n) Dalam masa damai, tidak ada lagi kerusuhan = In peacetime, there is no riot. (a) Kita dapat menyelesaikan masalah secara damai = We can solve this problem peacefully. Hati saya sangat damai = My heart is very peaceful. (v) beristirahat dengan damai = rest in peace perdamaian; (n) perdamaian dunia = world peace. Kita harus memelihara perdamaian antar tetangga = We have to keep the peace between neighbors. lagu perdamaian = peace song. kongres perdamaian = peace congress so, I thought peace is more related with perdamaian
