What is "layers of flavor"? In food context, does it have literal meaning? For example, chicken is salty (first layer) but marinade is sweet (second layer), and sauce is sour (third layer) and layers mean things from the innermost to the outermost?

What does it mean when a chef says "layers of flavor"?

Thank you

It could be literal. There are many foods that are layered and each layer has a different flavor. For example an ice cream sundae is a dessert with ice cream in a bowl with some sweet sauce (chocolate, caramel or other) poured over the top. Whipped cream would be placed on top of the sauce with chopped nuts sprinkled on top of the whipped cream. Each of these food items has a different flavor.🌺

No, it doesn’t necessarily have a literal meaning in the sense that you describe. It’s more a way of saying that the flavor of something is very complex and not just one flavor.
