My name’s Filippo.
I’m a native speaker of Italian and live in Rome.
I hold the DITALS I certificate, i.e., the license for the Teaching of Italian as a Foreign Language issued by the University for Foreigners of Siena.
I can also speak English and am very fond of British English phonology.
I have two degrees, one in philosophy and the other in religious studies, and taught in secondary schools in Rome for 21 years.
I mainly speak standard Italian or, as linguists would say, “Tuscan Italian as spoken by Roman citizens”, i.e., the Italian language as historically spoken in Florence, without its peculiar local features.
Ich als Lehrkraft
I'm a very thoughtful teacher who first of all does his best to put students at their ease in order to help them overcome their "affective filter". In other words, my students should feel totally comfortable and safe without ever worrying about, for example, making mistakes. Mistakes are actually our best friends when we learn a language.
I'm also a very thorough teacher and like to give my students thoughtful replies. I'm not afraid of saying "Please, give me some more time to go into this matter. I'll send you an email later" or "We'll go back to it next time". I wouldn't be able to put together an improbable answer just to get out of trouble.
Meine Stunden und mein Unterrichtsstil
If you’re already attending an Italian language course or are a self-taught student, I will be your go-to person for any further explanations and corrections, as complement to your personal journey to learning Italian.
If, on the contrary, you are looking for more structured classes as part of a broader and comprehensive Italian language course or focused on a specific field (e.g., business Italian, academic, and so on), I will be happy to tutor you and provide you with selected materials.
I can also provide topic-focused speaking classes on subjects of your choice and offer help for exams preparation for language certificates of all levels (A1 – C2).

Pronto italiano! (2) [10-lesson packages available | 1 lesson is free!]
I’ve now had 100 lessons with Filippo and this is an update from my original review; all my previous commendations still apply. I’ve been taking lessons in an intensive mode in order to break through a B1 barrier. I kept repeating B1 but was never able to incorporate the grammatical concepts into actual usage. Filippo’s calm and encouraging teaching style massively built my confidence, and as a result I achieved a 93% result on my recent CILS exam.
Not only do I finally feel like I’m moving forward, Filippo adapts to my personal learning style and even my mood of the day. While I prefer to learn from our text book, if there is an event or major distraction in my life, he has no problem allowing me to ramble on for a full lesson of conversation.
Our lessons are immensely enjoyable. I highly recommend Filippo as a patient, knowledgeable teacher who is a pleasure to learn with.

Filippo is an excellent teacher and is also a joy to talk to!
He is very good at catching when you make small mistakes (or big ones) and then explaining not only what the mistake is, but gently clarifying the reason why it's a mistake in a way that is clear and memorable. He is an incredible font of linguistic knowledge and his years of teaching mean he also has a ton of resources to help you if you have specific goals (like doing an exam). I recommend him very highly!
Filippo è un ottimo insegnante, ed è anche solo una gioia parlare con lui! È molto bravo a cogliere quando commetti piccoli errori (o grandi) e poi spiega non solo qual è l'errore, ma chiarisce perché è un errore in un modo chiaro e memorabile. È un'incredibile fonte di conoscenza linguistica e i suoi anni di insegnamento significano che ha anche un sacco di risorse per aiutarti a insegnarti se hai obiettivi specifici (come fare un esame). Lo consiglio vivamente!

I always have a great time chatting with Filippo, and he's always really good about providing me vocabulary in advance and giving me helpful feedback on my grammar.

A great lesson per usual. Filippo is very helpful in calling out grammatical errors and explaining the proper way to express certain ideas.

Filippo is an excellent teacher who engages students in the material rather than simply presenting and expecting attention. He is also very organized with sending out any assignments or relevant vocabulary ahead of a lesson, which I really appreciate. Another great aspect of his teaching is his familiarity with common pitfalls awaiting new speakers of Italian (for example: apparently "fa senso" tells someone you might need to vomit, rather than "makes sense," as an English speaker might expect). I highly recommend him.
