My guess is number 1. The writing isn't as clear as it could be, but since the next phrase "cries at commercials" is about the girl (not her family), I'd say that all the phrases are about the girl, not her family. Also, the specific punctuation before "grew" and after "family" supports this conclusion, although it's really not a good idea to depend on a punctuation mark to disambiguate a sentence.
