How do you define vegetable?

A pumpkin has seeds--lot and lots and lots of them--so botanically it must be a fruit. However, the words "fruit" and "vegetable" have more than one definition. The United States Department of Agriculture classifies it as a vegetable. I don't think I can post a link here, but a web search for "usda vegetable group" should find it. It is classified with the "red and orange vegetables." Agriculturally, nutritionally, and from a culinary point of view pumpkins are a vegetable--like squash or cucumbers. A famous legal case arose is the United States involved whether tomatoes were fruits or vegetables. The reason it went to the Supreme Court was that the tariffs (import taxes) were very different for "fruits" and "vegetables." The court ruled that the law in question referred to the everyday meanings of "fruit" and "vegetable," not the technical, botanical definition.
